The Early Elementary Excuse

So we hear it all the time..."My kids are too young to do this.."

To be honest, I am really tired of the excuses. You can find a loophole for everything when you want to. What about adding technology into teaching for the lower elementary classes?
It's time to be proactive - let's think of some suggestions for what we could do on this blog.
  • Why not involve the parents and have a parent/student wiki or blog where parents and students are responsible for posting. This is a great way to ensure that our students know that their parents are engaged in their education and it alos keeps them safe :)

Any other suggestions?

  1. Mat I appreciate your fight against the cynacism. That's straight from the leadership componant of this path we are nearing the end of. My daughter is 10, a little older than your kiddos, but has been doing amazing things on the computer for quite a while. When I asked her to create a power point Christmas card this year, a program she had not used yet, she mastered it quickly, down to the hyperlinks.
I don't think we can judge what they can do until they are given the opportunity.

There is the other tried and true method- Pairing them with older students to create the blog or wiki....

  2. I agree with both of you that getting the students and parents or student and students involved is a great way to get them engaged in their learning and both of your ideas are great. I plan on using them in my second grade classroom to discuss topics we are discussing in Social Studies, Science, etc. However, getting parents involved at my school is going to be tough because we have such a high poverty rate at my school. I am going to be doing them in school because I have learned that if I am going to projects I need to do them here and make sure I have all the materials that we need.

Now playing Devils Advocate: Mat you said you were going to have the kids create parent-student wiki's, well what would you do if they don't have a computer at home, which most of our children don't have one?
