So in class we starting talking about how teachers might be worried/turned off from blogging for class assignments because of the potention danger of the internet and children. I think there is something to be said about the risk of children finding something they shouldn't or God forbid a blog resulting in a lawsuit against a teacher but couldn't this fear be used to really teach our kids about internet safety first and then venture out with blogging?
Just a thought...

ReplyDeleteI don't think we can shy away from blogs for fear of what might happen. Sure, we could put the kids in a bubble for all their lives. There is too much potential with the internet. Now you teach little ones, so cute, so they probably will be doing this all at school (unless you get parents involved....) that should provide some protection, with you and the school filter. My high schoolers are all over the place, and discovering ways around the filter!
I agree with Shanae that as students get older they will just learn how to get around the filters. Therefore, instead of stopping them from exposure, we need to teach them internet safety. In my classroom, my students already know the phrase "google it" as we google their questions at least once a day. For example, one student asked me today what mummies looked like in Ancient Egypt. So they had to search and sort through hits on Google for Kids to find the answer themselves. However, I do see the danger of using Technology in classrooms, as many people are nervous of the outcomes and lawsuits that may come with which in turn leads to many restrictions on teachers.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone heard of Netsmarts. Its a program offered by Cox and it is great. Has an assembly for kids and characters etc. Teaches them all about how to properly use the internet and what to look for as unsafe internet practice.
